Microsoft’s Senior (L63) loop is predictable once you see the shape: a gate screen (OA or live), a virtual onsite heavy on coding narration + distributed design, and an optional As-Appropriate closer with someone who already read your packet. Behavioral is not a soft appendix — each tech round usually states a Growth Mindset / collaboration focus. At L63, interviewers score architectural judgment and clear method more than raw puzzle speed.

L63 (Senior) loop

Common path for Senior (not yet Principal):

  1. Recruiter or hiring-manager screen (~30 min) — logistics, motivation, level fit
  2. Online coding assessment (HackerRank, often ~90 min, 2 problems) or live technical phone screen (45–60 min)
  3. Onsite / virtual loop: coding ×2–3 (45–60 min each, behavioral woven in), system design ×1 (sometimes HLD+LLD flavor)
  4. Optional As-Appropriate (AA) with a more senior engineer/leader
  5. Decision / offer (often 1–2 weeks)

L64+ — what changes

L64+ candidates should bank stories with multi-team blast radius, mentoring that changed how others ship, and design decisions that survived production incidents — not “I owned a service ticket.”

As-Appropriate (AA) round

AA is Microsoft’s distinctive closer — analogous in spirit to Amazon’s Bar Raiser, but not identical. It typically fires when earlier rounds show enough signal. A principal / senior leader (or skip-level) has read prior feedback and probes gaps — technical or behavioral. Treat it as hire/no-hire weighted, not a casual chat.

Prep plan that clears L63

One successful L63 path used nine months: six on depth-first DSA, three on LLD/HLD with DDIA + Alex Xu + live design practice. Shorter arcs work if design is already warm — many public guides cite ~6–8 weeks when fundamentals are intact.

  1. Coding: theory per topic → 5–10 curated problems + follow-ups (mastery > volume) — coding series
  2. System design: books + mocks that force articulation; videos alone are weak — HLD delivery
  3. LLD/OOD: rate limiter / parking lot style if your org leans OOD — LLD path
  4. Behavioral: bank 6–8 STAR stories with cross-team impact — “I shipped a ticket” is below Senior bar
  5. In-room: align before code, timed composure, method over speed
  6. Mock one coding+behavioral-bite block and one full HLD aloud weekly late-stage

Lattice study path for Microsoft

  1. Crack any backend interview — prep plan + cheat sheet
  2. DSA roadmap — depth-first pattern banks
  3. LLD delivery → concurrency
  4. Core concepts → API design, indexing, consistency
  5. HLD delivery → practice designs
  6. STAR → staff Q&A (cross-team impact)
  7. Re-read this guide’s AA + alignment habits; timed mocks weekly late-stage

Signal rubric — Microsoft strong vs weak

7-day Microsoft plan (week before)

  1. D−7–6: Timed coding in a plain editor; force a buy-in sentence every solve.
  2. D−5: One full HLD aloud (record); cut filler.
  3. D−4: LLD + concurrency drill.
  4. D−3: STAR bank mapped to conflict / growth / cross-team.
  5. D−2: Mock with behavioral bite in every tech round.
  6. D−1: Light review + sleep; trust the prep arc. No new topics.
